Kenroku-en, in the heart of Kanazawa, is one of Japan's three great and most beautiful gardens. Stepping into the open-air museum that is Hida Folk Village or 'Hida No Sato', is like being transported back to a bygone era. Built during the Edo period (1603-1868), the traditional gassho-zukuri thatched-roof houses tell a story of rural life in the Hida region. With their steep, thatched rooves resembling a pair of hands joined in prayer, they are designed to withstand the weight of winter snow and send it sliding to the ground.
