Street Art – Bergen Style

Bergen’s artwork isn’t just confined to galleries. Wander its streets, and a plethora of street art is revealed in delightful abundance around every corner, exposing Bergen’s true personality as the epicentre of Scandinavian Street Art.

Over 1000 artworks adorn walls, buildings and footpaths, created by some of Europe’s most reputable street artists like AFK, Argus, M.u.M and Dolk. Even Banksy made his mark in Bergen back in 2000, before he became a household name, but sadly, his artwork was removed by the local council.

Bergen’s streets are home to a multitude of bronze sculptures, both old and new. ‘The Homeless’ (Uteliggeren) by Arne Mæland c1999, takes refuge at the front entrance of the former Bergens Privatbank, now the high-end fashion store Høyer. It sits in stark contrast to the more lively, upright figure gracing a shopfront further down the street. Uteliggeren’s inscription in Norwegian means “Nobody is only what you see.”

Nykirken – The Children’s Church was originally built in 1621 and is informally known as ‘the Children’s Church’. It is largely decorated inside by local children, and although technically not Street Art, this window inside the church has been decorated by the children to look like stained glass.

Take a tour or just wander around Bergen, this buzzing City of Contrasts. Not only is it known by many other names such as the City of Culture, UNESCO City of Gastronomy, Gateway to the Fjords and City Between Seven Mountains, it has also become the emerging epicentre of Scandinavian Street Art.

Bergen, Norway’s second largest city, has many names – City of Culture, UNESCO City of Gastronomy, Gateway to the Fjords and City Between Seven Mountains. But my favourite name is ‘City of Contrasts’, and going on a ‘Søndagstur’ is a great way to prove it!
