Thai cuisine’s rise to global fame is no accident—it’s a vibrant fusion of flavors, textures, and aromas. It’s known for its balance of five key tastes:
- Sweet (palm sugar, coconut milk)
- Sour (lime juice, tamarind)
- Salty (fish sauce, soy sauce)
- Bitter (certain herbs and greens)
- Umami (fermented ingredients, broths)
Thai food blends influences from India, China, Malaysia, and even Portugal (chilies came via Portuguese traders). This makes it familiar yet exotic to many palates. In 2002 Thailand launched the Global Thai initiative to promote Thai restaurants and ingredients worldwide. Today, there are over 17,000 Thai restaurants globally, many certified for authenticity. Following are my favourite, easy Thai dishes and recipes inspired by my travels in Thailand.
