Surrounded by a stunning coastline, filled with fertile farmlands, cradling an ancient and majestic red centre and boasting an envious laidback lifestyle. a warm climate and abundant natural attractions – it’s no wonder Australia is known as the Lucky Country.
But when it comes to its proximity to the rest of the world, Australia is at a bit of a disadvantage. To reach popular destinations just outside of the Pacific region, it’s a good 8+ hour flight, and to get to Europe and the UK, well, that’s a minimum of 24 hours, via an often tedious destination-hopping route.
The ‘Project Sunrise’ Reveal
But this week Australia’s national carrier, Qantas, announced a sleek, pain-free new way for Aussies to reach the ‘other side of the globe’ – from October 2027, Qantas will fly daily from Sydney to London non-stop.
For the first time, Australians will be able to travel in a single, uninterrupted flight that saves up to four hours compared with the fastest one-stop service today, and flights will go on sale in February.
“Qantas was founded on a single belief: that Australia’s distance from the world should never stand in the way. Today, I feel proud to announce the most significant step in that mission in our 105-year history.” Vanessa Hudson, CEO Qantas Group
A little background: This route has been known as the Kangaroo Route since 1947 when it took seven stops to reach London. Since then, every generation of aircraft has removed a stop from that journey, with Project Sunrise removing the very last one. The project takes its name from Qantas flights that crossed the Indian Ocean during the Second World War, a journey so long that those on board witnessed the sun rising twice.

A New Dawn of Travel
About the Aircraft:
When it joins the Qantas fleet next year, you will be able to fly between Australia and almost anywhere in the world on an ultimate long-range aircraft, the Airbus A350-1000ULR. It is designed specifically for long haul flying, with its entire onboard experience reimagined for comfortable ultra long-haul travel. Working with the Charles Perkins Centre at the University of Sydney, Qantas has scientifically studied every cabin element required by your body during extended periods in the air, and the results are a well-considered list of features. Think a lighting system calibrated to your destination’s time zone to help with jetlag, a world-first Wellbeing Zone, and a service tailored around rest and recovery. For Australians, it’s a new dawn of travel.

The Wellbeing Zone:
Located between the Premium Economy and Economy cabins, the A350’s inflight Wellbeing Zone offers a space to enjoy a selection of premium self-serve refreshments, a zone where you can follow specially curated guided movements on large monitors and a selection of cleverly sculpted surfaces which integrate handles to facilitate stretching.
Not just any Aircraft:
With a host of luxuriously crafted amenities and innovations, Qantas’ aim is to deliver you refreshed and as jet-lag-free as possible to the other side of the world, and in ultimate comfort. In addition to the Wellbeing Zone’s unique restorative offerings, passengers will also enjoy access to fast and free Wi-Fi in all cabins, 12 circadium rhythm-based lighting sequences (including ‘Sunrise’, ‘Sunset’, and ‘Awake scenarios), and over 40% of the cabin allocated to Premium seating – this gives it the lowest seat count of any A350-1000 in service around the world.
